Jack, Stan asked that I post this for him; he is on travel attm... John B.

Jack,

In response to your question asking if the WRF Rapid Refresh will
use some kind of isentropic coordinates, the answer is no. We would
not rule out development of some kind of isentropic-sigma hybrid core
for the future, but there are no plans for it right now. The two main
options for the WRF dynamic core are the NMM (non-hydrostatic mesoscale
model, from NCEP/EMC) and the ARW (advanced research WRF, from NCAR).
Neither has any isentropic aspect to the vertical coordinate. We at
NOAA/ESRL (no longer FSL as of 10/1/2005) still consider the
hybrid-isentropic coordinate to be potentially advantageous, but it just
isn't an option for the first version of the WRF-based Rapid Refresh.

Thanks for asking.

Stan
