Justin, With the 13-km RUC now running operationally, the current efforts are toward a future version of the RUC to 1) use a version of the WRF model to take advantage of the community effort, 2) to run the future WRF-based RUC (to be called the Rapid Refresh) over a larger, North American domain including Alaska, Canada, Puerto Rico, etc., and 3) to remain at 13-km resolution initially until additional computer resources allow further reduction in resolution. The development and testing of the Rapid Refresh will be over the next 2 years. You can already look at initial real-time forecasts from the WRF model initialized with RUC analyses (including initial cloud/hydrometeor data) on the RUC web site.
