Cloud Fields

I retrieved some RUC data in pressure coordinates from the ARM archive and an attempting to make sense of the cloud fields (heightcldbase, heightcldtop, and heightcldtopconv) the ARM "mentor" for the data pointed me this direction for assistance. Looking at the data for cloud base and top height at a single point for 24 hours (shown below), there is a variety of values; some very large and some negative. The numbers do not seem to make physical sense and I was hoping you could shed some light on this difficulty? I have been through the FSL website looking for documentation, but have found no answer to explain these data values. This sample is specifically from the file: sgpruc20isobX1.c1.20050701.000000.cdf off the [0,0] grid point using the cdf defined data type of "float", units of meters, and retrieving the information using IDL.
