It's been a bit, but I found my (!) problem. I was using a built-in tool in the IDL software package (Import HDF) to take a quick look at the data. As a result the ARM netCDF files that have a .cdf extension (almost all data availble from ARM) was opened using cdf conventions and not netCDF conventions. When the same file is opened with ncdump or in a seperate IDL program that forces the use of the netCDF conventions the data appears as it should. Thanks for the replies.
