Soundings down for several days

Posted By: Bill Moninger

Yesterday (Friday) afternoon we discovered that excessive use of the interactive RAP/HRRR/RAOB/etc interactive sounding site (http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov) was causing the rest of our website to become unresponsive. Users could only intermittently receive RAP and HRRR data.

Because many weather service offices and other forecasters rely on these models in their operational work, a management decision was made to temporarily shut off the interactive soundings. A quick test revealed that this shutdown enabled the website to promptly deliver our primary products, so we have shut down the interactive sounding site for the next several days.

We are in the process of installing http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov on a separate (and probably more powerful) web server. We expect to have this new server up sometime next week. We'll notify this forum when the new server is up.

We apologize for any inconvenience this sudden outage may be causing. In the meantime, please be aware that you can access pre-generated RAP soundings for many sites at
http://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/soundings/Welcome.cgi?dsKey=rap_jet
and HRRR soundings at
http://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov/soundings/Welcome.cgi?dsKey=hrrr_jet
