In Response To: RUC to 24hr? and other Questions (Mike Dross)

Mike Dross' original questions to the RUC Forum from 12 May, finally with some answers:

Q. Are there plans to increase RUC's run time out to 24 hours?
A. An increase in RUC forecast projection out to 24h has been discussed within NOAA, requested by AWC and SPC, but not yet planned by NCEP. The RUC runs at FSL go out to 24h, and the dev RUC run go out to 48h (products available on the RUC web page at http://ruc.fsl.noaa.gov)

Q. Also, having 1 hour data out to 12 hours on NOAAPORT would be great. Right now it's 00 01 02 03 04 05 06 07 08 09 12. Hours 7 and 8 seem to have only a few parameters send over NOAAPORT.
A. Of course, NOAAPORT has band-width limitations and many different datasets requested. We suggest requesting what you need through your organization to NOAA/NWS.

Q. Also what is convection scheme used in the RUC? Is the RUC using Level II radar data to initialize its' runs?
A. The Grell-Devenyi convective scheme is used -- see more info in the Feb 2004 Mon. Wea. Rev. article on the RUC model (pdf available via the RUC web site - main page). Radar reflectivity data is assimilated into the experimental 'dev' RUC version run at FSL, real-time products available on the RUC web page.

Sorry it took a while to answer your question.
