Hello Slav,

Thanks for your interest in our soundings page.

Bak40 is the semi-retired RUC model, and Op40 is the current RAP model which replaced the RUC. You can read more about the details of the models at http://ruc.noaa.gov and http://rapidrefresh.noaa.gov . As for reliability, there may be some debate, but I would believe the RAP to be more reliable.

I'm not sure why the GIFs page defaults to Bak40, but it may be just that it hasn't yet been updated.

There isn't a tutorial specifically for the rucsoundings page, but we do have a video tutorial for our AMDAR web page at amdar.noaa.gov/videos, and I believe video #2 will illustrate most of the capabilities (although some may be applicable only to the AMDAR page).
