In Response To: Sounding over Alaska (Jason)

Hello Jason,

if you ask for "Op40" model output, which is the default at http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov/, you'll only have coverage over the CONUS (lower 48 states), that is, over the previous RUC domain.

If you choose "RR1h" as your data source, you'll be able to get soundings for sites in the entire RAP domain, including Alaska. HOWEVER, please be aware that unpacking the data for the entire RAP domain, at 13km takes longer--and puts substantially more load on our server--than unpacking the Op40 data. This shouldn't be a problem for most human-generated requests. But automated requests for the "RR1h" data could load down our server.

Be advised that when the load on our server gets to high, we automatically cut off sounding requests until the load decreases, so no one is able to receive sounding data. We have to take this step to maintain the stability of our web server.

We've updated the documentation on http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov/ to indicate that the "Op40" product covers only the CONUS.

Thanks for your post; it has helped us clarify our documentation.

-Bill
