At long last, the default soundings on the GSD soundings page at http://rucsoundings.noaa.gov/ are generated from the operational RAP model. When "Op40" soundings are requested (the default), soundings are generated from RAP analyses and forecasts interpolated to a CONUS 40km grid. (We use this grid to minimize the load on our web server.) Since 2-May-2012, "Op40" soundings were generated from the backup RUC model, also on a 40 km CONUS grid. Previous to that, "Op40" soundings were generated from the operational RUC model. Our apologies for the much longer than expected delay in providing soundings from the operational RAP. -Bill
