Hello RUC and Rapid Refresh (RR/RAP) users, NCEP proposes that the small 2-d only sgrb files made for the RUC NOT be made for the Rapid Refresh. Geoff Manikin and I are asking for your comments. Currently, with the RUC, 3 types of GRIB files are provided at a given resolution: bgrb (native 3-d fields + 2d grids including land-surface fields), pgrb (isobaric 3-d fields + 2d grids), and sgrb (25 2-d fields, no 3-d fields). These are described in http://ruc.noaa.gov/ruc2vars.html. We propose that the native (bgrb) and isobaric (pgrb) fields be made available (both including all 2-d fields in the sgrb file) but NOT any sgrb files. All fields in the sgrb files would still be available in the bgrb and pgrb files. Fields available from the RR are shown in http://ruc.noaa.gov/rr/RR-fields.txt (expect an updated version of this list by later today - Thursday).
