If any of you noticed that the RUC performance seemed degraded between 2 March and 20 April, it was. Background: It was discovered on Monday 4/12 that the RUC upgrade implementation back on 2 March was not fully installed correctly at NCEP. First, ESRL found that the operational RUC had been performing worse verification-wise than the backup RUC run at ESRL since 3/2, primarily in the lower troposphere for wind and relative humidity. Then, NCEP then traced this further, discovering that some of the corrected executables from the upgrade were not put in the correct directories. These problems with the RUC executables were corrected on 20 April for the 15z run. We apologize for not getting this message posted out on the RUC forum much earlier - the forum software was not properly. Stan B.
