In Response To: GRIB file changes (Jack Glendening)

To explain what happened here, we all kind of dropped the ball here. There were a couple of changes to our grib table that were part of this implementation, and we simply forgot to mention them in the implementation announcement. Several grib records had the incorrect parameter number, and these were changed.

Specifically, bare soil evaporation had the parameter number of 224; it has been changed to 199.

Canopy water evaporation has been changed from 225 to 200.

The evapotranspiration flux has been changed from 186 to 210.

These fields are found in only the native level (bgrb) files, and since most users use the pressure level (pgrb) files, the changes were not widely noticed.

If you're still following along, the process that converts the grib1 files to grib2 is unable to identify the new parameter number for transpiration, and it is throwing that field away during the conversion of bgrb files to grib2 format. Users will therefore notice one less grib record in all grib2 bgrb files. There is no change in number of records in the grib1 bgrb files or in any pgrb files.

We apologize for any inconvenience this change may have caused, and we certainly intend to notify the RUC community about such changes in advance. We'll also be sure to give a heads-up when the processing of the grib2 bgrb data is corrected.
