Land-Water Masks for 13km at 13/20/40km

In response to requests for the 40km land-water mask by Rob Burton last week and Kevin Doty in May: There are now ASCII files for land-water masks from 13km native grid (451 x 337) RUC (operational since June 2005) for interpolated fields to 20km (301 x 225) and 40km (151 x 113) resolution. These are all available at http://ruc.noaa.gov/RUC.domain.cgi. All of the land-water masks were derived using the same interpolation algorithm used in RUC post-processing for all output grids at 20km and 40km resolution There are also gif files available for each of these land-water masks available at http://ruc.noaa.gov/gif/landwater. The degradation of the sharpness of the land-water masks is evident in comparing these figures. The surface fields from the RUC are certainly much clearer using 13km resolution, especially near coastlines. We recommend that RUC users review the RUC data available from the NCEP ftp server at http://ruc.noaa.gov/ruc20.data-access.html and the access of the RUC data at ftp://ftpprd.ncep.noaa.gov/pub/data/nccf/com/ruc/prod/. NOTE: 13km-resolution data IS available in GRIB2 format, with hourly output out to 9h duration updated every hour (out to 12h for 00,03,06,09,12,15,18,21z runs). We hope this information is helpful and sorry it took this long to get a good response out. -- Stan Benjamin Original question I am using the RUC-40 km forecast fields to derive certain fields and I need the ability to mask out sigin\\nificant water areas. How can I create that field? If a file with that exists I have not been able to find it.
