radar refl assimilation in experimental RUCs

Assimilation of hourly 3-d radar reflectivity is now in experimental versions of the RUC run at ESRL/GSD. This is accomplished by specifying latent heating in forward component only of the diabatic digital filter initialization in the RUC model. An initial version of this technique was implemented initially in the development RUC13 (devRUC13) in February, and after several iterations, it is now also in the backup RUC13 as of yesterday (3 April 2007). An example is available at http://ruc.noaa.gov/pdf/Radar-RUC.pdf. This technique appears to have been quite successful overall, although the technique does not yet include convection suppression where erroneous model convection occurs. GSD will be working next on convection suppression.

Reflectivity products have been added to both the devRUC13 and backupRUC13 in the real-time web products under http://ruc.noaa.gov. Both the devRUC13 and backupRUC13 look about the same at this time, but will begin to differ when convection suppression is added first to the devRUC13.

We will post a little bit more information on this next week. After that, questions will be welcome.

Thanks to many GSD folks to get this going (RUC team, Chris Harrop) and also to NSSL for their hourly 3-d reflectivity data.
