Hello Richard,

thanks for your interest in our RUC GRIB viewer at http://ruc.noaa.gov/view/ . We've recently updated it so that the default time is 3 hours before the current time (rounded down t0 0, 3,6 etc.), rather than at 0Z of the current day, to more accurately reflect when the most recent analysis is available. But this initial time is just a guess at when the most recent model runs are available. You can certainly change the default time to look for more recent runs, and model forecasts valid into the future.

Files are available on the GRIB viewer just as soon as they're produced, which varies with model cycle. The schedule is unfortunately too complex and changeable to try to describe accurately. And, due to disk space limitations, only the last 18 hours or so of model runs are available.

You might try looking at the pre-made graphical products (under 'Current and forecast weather' on the RUC page left-hand menu) to get an idea of the currently-available valid times for each RUC cycle.

Sorry I can't be more precise. The GRIB viewer was initially designed for internal use, so has minimal documentation. Still, we feel its valuable for detailed looks at model runs.

-Bill
