Greg, Stan, Looked at aircraft observations in that area between 16z and 01z and don't see any evidence of bad data around 500mb. There aren't very many soundings in this area, but enough for a general idea. Here are some numbers from the ESRL Aircraft data web soundings PLACE TIME 500MB TEMPS
OMA 2225 -17.9 OKC 1812 -15.3
DEN 1634 -15.0
TUL 0030 -13.9 AMA 2320 -11.1 Those are all of the soundings available between those times, and there were no soundings at ICT, as there sometimes are at night. So I would be surprised if aircraft data are the cause, unless erroneous cold data below or above 500mb could influence temps at that level. Since almost all of the aircraft over Kansas are at 30,000- 40,000' (as there are few soundings), I think it is unlikely that bad data could effect 500mb. Hope this is useful. Regards,
