Greg, There were apparently obs (probably aircraft but not yet confirmed) with too cold temperatures in this area in Kansas around or just before 21z. The parallel RUC version running at NCEP/EMC didn't have this problem. Its more detailed QC caught this error. (see comparison at http://ruc.noaa.gov/gif/ruc13/compare500_21f0.gif). The parallel RUC includes a set of assimilation/QC/model improvements described in http://ruc.noaa.gov/ruc13_docs/RUC-testing-Feb06.htm and a February RUC forum message (http://ruc.noaa.gov/forum/f2/Welcome.cgi/noframes/read/1424 ). One quick QC fix was implemented in the RUC at that time, but the additional QC changes in the parallel RUC clearly made a difference in this case. It is hoped that these changes will be implemented into the operational RUC within the next several weeks. Thanks for pointing this out. Stan
