Thanks for the explanation. Take a look at the F6 RUC sounding from SFO: http://chesavtraining.com/images/Sparse-data-mid-level.gif The mid-levels from 5,000 to 15,000 ft have just a few data points (3). There is a pretty healthy lapse rate between these levels, starts out near-adiabatic at 5,000 feet and then becomes less adiabatic at 15,000 ft. The near-adiabatic-lapse-rate exists mainly below 5000 ft where there are many data points. Given your explanation, there should be less data points near the surface which is closer to being adiabatic than above. Compare this against an F9 forecast for SFO. http://chesavtraining.com/images/not-so-sparse-data-mid-levels.gif The first image has three data points between 5,000 and 15,000 ft (with two almost on top of each other) and the second one has seven data points. Could you explain the difference between these two soundings and why there is a difference in the number of points?
