TAMDAR aircraft obs in dev2 RUC

While I'm writing messages, one more of interest to many. The experimental TAMDAR aircraft observations for the upcoming Great Lakes Fleet Experiment, are now being assimilated into the experimental development-2 version of the RUC. We are frequently seeing some variations in lower tropospheric temps and RH between the dev-2 RUC and the similarly configured dev RUC (the latter does not have TAMDAR data). From several inspections in the last week, we have seen very reasonable behavior and no problems in those few cases.

An example is shown at http://ruc.fsl.noaa.gov/gif/tamdar/TAMDAR.tiff from a case at 22z 17 Dec 04 from Devils Lake, ND. The green sounding is from a descent into DVL from a Mesaba-equipped Mesaba Air aircraft, compared to the red sounding - operational RUC without TAMDAR, and the lavender sounding - dev-2 RUC with TAMDAR assimilation. The main difference from the TAMDAR in this case is from the temperature sounding. Note that the oper-RUC and dev-2-RUC analyses both fit the surface temperature very well, but with a very significant correction to the temperature profile in the lower 200 mb with inclusion of the TAMDAR sounding.

More information on the TAMDAR/GLFE project (with many folks working on it) is available at http://www.crh.noaa.gov/tamdar/. Special credit at FSL to Bill Moninger and Tracy Lorraine Smith for work on this project.
