RUC analysis change implementation likely tomorrow

An implementation is likely (but not certain) to occur tomorrow for a change to the RUC analysis. Geoff Manikin at NCEP will post to confirm this implementation when it occurs. The change will allow boundary-layer depth to be used to more effectively assimilate surface/METAR observations. This is a revised version of this PBL-based assimilation that was originally part of the April 2004 RUC change package. This new version provides more coherent moisture fields aloft, and temperature and dewpoint analyses near the surface. More information is available in a powerpoint presentation online at http://ruc.fsl.noaa.gov/ppt_pres/NCEP-RUC-Sept04-change-e.htm. A paper on the same topic will be presented at the AMS Severe Local Storms /Aviation Conference next week, and a PDF for it is available at http://ruc.fsl.noaa.gov/pdf/AMS-Avx-SLS-Oct2004/Oct04-Benjamin-PBL-assim.pdf. Please post on the forum or email if you have questions. Stan Benjamin
