RUC CAPE is not surface CAPE - labeling problem

Hello, especially NWS RUC users,

The CAPE field produced by the RUC is not a surface-based CAPE. Instead, it is a CAPE calculated from the maximum theta-e parcel in the lowest 300 mb, which can give elevated-based convection potential.

We just found out that the AWIPS labeling for this field is SBCAPE -- not correct. This was based on an important error in a detail in the GRIB labeling for the CAPE field. We will work on getting it corrected, but please spread the word, especially with AWIPS users for the time being.

There is more info on the RUC diagnostic field products, including CAPE, at http://ruc.fsl.noaa.gov/vartxt.html.
