Todd,

Isobaric RUC fields are smoothed for all variables, but more so for heights in the 20km RUC, as you read in the RUC20 TPB.

The effective smoothing is larger for 40km RUC isobaric fields than for 20km isobaric fields. You didn't say what resolution you were using, but we suggest going to 20km data if you're not already doing so.

For what it's worth, there is a capability with the WRF Standard Initialization code to initialize from the 20km RUC native coordinate data, for which there is no smoothing at all. If you had a way to initialize MM5 from the 20km native data, that is the way to go if you wish to avoid smoothed fields.
