In Response To: Rainfall included in assimilation ? (Jack Glendening)

Just a follow-on to Stan's message. The precipitation
input to our land-surface model, which predicts soil moisture and temperature, as well as snow cover, is the precipitation
occurring during the first hour of the previous RUC
forecast, since we cycle on a 1-hour frequency. The
accuracy of our soil moisture, then, will depend in some measure on the accuracy of our 1-h pcpn forecasts. Verifying soil moisture
is difficult, but we believe that our 1-h pcpn fcsts are sufficiently accurate to capture at least the broad aspects of soil-mositure spatial gradients and temporal trends.

The radar assimilation mentioned by Stan is motivated in part to improve these 1-h pcpn forecasts so that our soil-mositure fields (and surface sensible and latent-heat fluxes are more accurate.
