There is a temporary problem with the RUC - no surface winds have been assimilated since about 15z on Tues 9 Jan. This was just discovered and hopefully will be fixed tomorrow. Another post will be made when the problem is fixed. In the interim period, if you're willing to use the web, try the analyses and forecasts from the RUC web page (http://ruc.fsl.noaa.gov) under '40km MAPS' to see a version of the 40km RUC with assimilation of sfc/METAR winds.
