Message: Bad RUC aftn sfc temps

Posted by John Brown on 18 May 99, 18:39 MT

Philip Bothwell, SPC, drew our attention this afternoon to widespread
excessively warm surface temperatures being forecast by the RUC. The problem
seems to be most severe over the interior West eastward into
the southern Plains.
The problem has been traced to excessively dry soil moisture in the RUC,
leading to too much sensible heat flux from the ground surface over these
areas, and not enough latent-heat flux. The problem seems to have only
appeared during the last few days. Soil moisture and afternoon surface
temperatures in our real-time cycle at FSL appear satisfactory. We will be
working to track this problem down so watch this forum for updates.
