The lack of convection might be connected to a recent change in the
convective scheme that was supposed to limit precipitation over water,
especially the Gulf of Mexico. Guess it worked too well ;-). This
change is being backed out because it also caused instability over
mountain terrain as well as over-suppressing the convection over water.
