Message: Rusty Pfost RUC2 precip msg

Posted by Stan Benjamin on 10 Jan 98, 15:04 MT

This is a post of an email today from Rusty Pfost, SOO, Jackson, MS. He sent some gifs that I will put in links for:

Well, I complained about the RUC-2 QPF in the conference call, but now I want to
praise it! Attached are 2 gif files...

24h obs precip over Mississippi - period ending 12z 1/7/98 - amounts in 0.01" http://maps.fsl.noaa.gov/forum/eval/ruc2pcpn.gif

RUC2 fcst precip for 12h period 1/7/98 - 03-15z - amounts in 0.1"
http://maps.fsl.noaa.gov/forum/eval/ruc2qpf.gif

1 shows some of the verifying
precipitation reports for the 24h period from 12Z 1/6 to 12Z 1/7, and the other
shows the RUC-2 qpf forecast from the 03Z 1/7 run for the 12 hr period from 03Z
to 15Z. The precipitation on the precip reports fell between 03Z 1/7 and 12Z 1/7 and we had a flash flood watch out for much of MS...especially south half. We
had to issue a number of flash flood warnings and had one dam break south of
Meridian, MS.

In particular I was please that the RUC-2 forecast the axis of max precip from
SE LA north across Hattiesburg MS to Meridian, MS, which is exactly where the
axis was! Although the RUC-2 was less than half the total amount ( an axis of
greater than 5 inches fell from New Orleans and Slidell to Hattiesburg), the
positioning of the axis and general shape of the precipitation field was pretty
darn good!
