.SYNOPSIS...

Gusty winds again today in the Eastern Sierra and central Nevada.
A few showers possible tonight mainly north of Susanville and
Gerlach. Lighter winds expected tonight with cold temperatures.
Warm up returns late this week and into the weekend.

.SHORT TERM...

Low pressure trough moves across northern California and Nevada
tonight and tomorrow with strong winds continuing across the
eastern Sierra and central Nevada this evening. Widespread windy
conditions with gusts up to 50 mph and wind prone areas seeing
gusts up to 60 mph or more. Rough lakes, aircraft turbulence, and
hazardous crosswinds for high profile vehicles continue through
this evening before the winds subside. There could be some areas
of blowing dust this afternoon and evening as well. Please see the
fire weather discussion below for more details.

Cold temperatures are expected for tonight, with low temperatures
Thursday morning into the 20s for many Sierra valleys and 30s/low
40s for the western Nevada valleys. Make sure to cover any
sensitive vegetation if you live in a typically colder valley, as
you could see a few hours of freezing temperatures. Temperatures
start to rebound on Friday with lighter winds. -Hoon

.LONG TERM...Saturday through next week...

As we go into the weekend, we remain in between a troughing
pattern off the Pacific Coast, with ridging over the Rockies which
means dry southwest flow over the region. There is a very small
chance that we could see the ridge build further west, bringing a
slight chance of thunder to the Sierra over the weekend. But, at
this time, it looks like only a 1 in 10 chance. It is more likely
that we will see warming temperatures through the weekend, under
dry southwest flow and typical afternoon zephyr winds.

High temperatures will return to the upper 80s and 90s for western
Nevada with 70s/80s in the Sierra. Winds should remain typical
summer-like breezes with gusts up to 25 mph in the late afternoons
and evenings. There is a low chance that we could see increased
winds late Monday as the Pacific trough swings through the Pac
NW, increasing the 700mb winds over our area. We will have to keep
an eye on that feature for fire weather and lake recreation
concerns.

The last thing we wanted to touch on, is the potential for well
above normal temperatures as we go into the later half of next
week. We could start to see the ridge building up with some
strength again over the Great Basin, with near record high
temperatures by the end of next week. -Hoon

.AVIATION...

Gusty winds continue through this evening, with most locations
seeing peak gusts up to 35kts. KMMH could peak out near 45kts this
evening. Mountain wave turbulence and low level wind shear will
accompany the gusty winds today. Winds will be strong enough to
produce some small dust plumes downwind of most dry lake beds.

A few showers are expected tonight mainly north of Susanville-
Gerlach and east of KLOL and KNFL. Thunderstorm chances remain
very low, but if they do occur it would be near the Oregon border.

.FIRE WEATHER...

* Red Flag Warnings are in effect for very windy conditions and low
  humidity this afternoon/evening from southern Mono County to
  southern Lyon, Mineral and southeast Churchill Counties.

No significant changes to the forecast today with a break in
critical fire weather conditions expected after this evening. For
the rest of today, critical fire weather conditions will continue
through far eastern California, central Nevada, and much of Utah,
and locally for zones 421, 429, 274. Widespread gusty south to
southwest winds 20-35 mph with gusts to 50 mph are expected this
afternoon and evening with gusts up to 60 mph possible in wind
prone areas around the lee of the Sierra. Humidities should stay
above criteria north of Highway 50, but very dry air remains in
Mono County with single digit RHs already present this morning.

Much lighter winds are expected tomorrow with a break in critical
fire weather concerns over the weekend. More typical daily summer
winds return Friday and over the weekend with a critical conditions
possible by early next week. Attention then turns to the potential
for another heat wave by the end of next week with a return of
thunderstorms also possible. -Zach
