AREA FORECAST DISCUSSION

.SYNOPSIS...Shower activity is diminishing rapidly across NW CA
with another several days of mild and virtually rain free
weather expected for the remainder of next week.

.DISCUSSION...Today`s rain activity will be replaced by gusty
northerly winds behind the weak front that moved through early
today. Widespread clearing is expected after tonight, however
morning valley clouds and even some episodes of stratus for
portions of the coast remain possible through next week. Gusty
northerlies will continue through at least Monday, strongest along
the coast. Winds are then expected to weaken and veer offshore as
an upper- level low passes to the south. This will likely result
in a mild warming and drying trend across the region during mid-
week. Although forecast models are depicting some additional rain
next weekend...this February is evolving as one of the driest on
record. Including today`s rain...the total for this February is
only a few hundredths above the 1923 record in Eureka of 0.50
inches.

.AVIATION...Drier northerly surface flow offshore the Oregon coast
has resulted in improvement at KCEC this afternoon. Cigs and vsbys
may fluctuate between IFR and VFR this evening before drier ENE
winds develop overnight and early Monday morning.

At KACV, IFR/LIFR has persisted through the day. Low level profiles
for KACV are favorable for redevelopment of IFR/LIFR ceilings and
vsbys this evening. It may fluctuate around between VFR and LIFR all
night before drier ENE winds take over early Monday morning and
conditions improve.

For the interior valleys, the moist push will result in widespread
low clouds and fog tonight as NE winds develop over the ridges.
Conditions are expected to improve Monday afternoon. Low clouds have
been forming over the coastal ranges to the NW of KUKI this
afternoon. Some of these may stray over the airfield in NW wind flow
this evening. Confidence is not high KUKI will see persistent MVFR
cigs with BUFKIT profiles indicating drying after 6z. Thus, VFR is
forecast to prevail at KUKI through the period, with perhaps some
low level turbulence for small aircraft this evening.

.MARINE...Northerly winds and steep seas will increase tonight
through Monday as high pressure builds offshore and a trough
develops near the coast. Models remain in good agreement with a
steady increase in speeds and steep wind-driven waves tonight
through Monday night. There is a potential for gale force gusts late
Monday afternoon through Monday night. A gale warning is in effect
for these gusts. Very steep seas around 13-15 feet are also expected
10-60nm from shore Monday evening and overnight.

North winds and steep seas should diminish on Tuesday, however seas
will most likely remain steep and hazardous, especially in the outer
waters. Conditions will lay down more substantially around mid week
for a day or two of tranquil marine conditions. WNW swells will
continue to propagate into NW California coastal waters through next
week. With short period wave energy expected to drop off mid week,
the threat of sneaker waves will increase.
